Hey all you flightsimmers out there.  Now that 9Dragons has landed at a major flighsim site near you, I thought it would be fun to hear your thoughts on 9Dragons, Kai Tak, Hong Kong, or just flightsim in general.  Why not leave what FS version you started with, how long have you been flightsimming, and come to think of it what version of FS did you first fly into Kai Tak and tried to "Shoot The Checkerboard"!

Thanks for dropping by!

Hi,

my name is Sebastian, I live in Germany and I am a flightsim enthusiast since the very beginning of flightsimming on PC. Now I am 28 years old and I started with twelve years on a 386 DX with incredible 40 mhz and an wasteful amount of 4 mb of RAM. My first serious sim was "Flightsimulator for Airbus A320", in fact there were a few sims before, but you cannot call a flightsim on an nostalgic Schneider-computer serious flightsimming... . My main interests in flightsimming always were flight planning, navigation and now as flightsims become more and more eyecandy the bushflying. like demanding approaches and I am a fan of the "Wonderful Madeira" addon since its beginning as well as "Lukla" and Innsbruck in "Austria Professional". Kai Tak will definetaly my new home in flightsimming.

Thanks for bringing back the excitement in FS'dom. I've been simming since FS98, and Kai  Tak has brought that old feeling back, like when I first mastered the heli in '98

A lot of work getting Asia specific AI up and running but worth the effort!

Don't have it yet??? STOP reading, go get it and get flying!!!

It's great to see Kai Tak reopened! I have memories of my 3 visits to Hong Kong when I was stationed overseas many moons ago. I remember as our ship sailed into Hong Kong Harbor, the scene of aircraft arriving and taking off from Kai Tak. What a fascinating sight it was, and will be again with this scenery. I found Kai Tak to be a part of THE most fascinating city I visited when stationed in the Pacific area. A great job guys, and thanks for the memories!!

Please forgive the no spam email address

Many congratulations to everyone who has contributed anything to this project. The resulting package, from the amazing eye candy scenery to the manual and publicity, is an impressive achievement of team work and dedication, well done to you all.

I appreciate not only the immense detail of the landscape and aviation but also the care taken to describe the installation and adding the AI traffic, ATC chatter, AFCADs and ready to use flights and charts - something a non technical but keen virtual pilot like I greatly value.

Thank you one and all; for your time, efforts, skills and sheer goodwill towards the rest of us.

A great job which deserves to become one of the milestones in flight simulation.

Peter

An absolutely fantastic job. My congratulations to everyone involved and my thanks for releasing this free of charge to the Flt Sim World. I'm not normally an 'eye candy' scenery type simmer being more interested in successful landings but Kai Tak requires the 'eye candy' to create the realism and the Creators of 9 Dragons have nailed it. My question - Is there going to be an FSX compatible release, commercial or otherwise and if so how do I obtain a copy of it?

Hi guys,

My name is Edmond, a simmer since FS5.1 and a Kai Tak freak who live in Hong Kong.

I've been living just 2 blocks south of the Epson building from 1973 to 1992, and my former high school (which you have modeled) is located besides the checker board hill and the sports ground. I was just one of those guys spotting planes from all locations you mentioned in the pilot's guide.

Your awesome creation is so real! Surely a ground-breaking classic, and simply excels all (once fantastic) freeware / payware sceneries ever produced for Kai Tak and the city.

It runs so smooth even with most of the display slider moved to the right in my 3.0 GHz system!

just couldn't find a word to express how much I thank you for your great efforts and talents involved in this!!

Congratulations!

You made page 3 of the Sunday Monday Post of 13 January with a quarter page spread!

I've installed the scenery and did a bit of 'sightseeing'. This is really impressive. I now need to modify some AI files to get flights into Kai Tak to make it really come to life.

Best regards

Although the article mistakenly mentioned the 47-degree landing turn as 90, it's nice to see the project being featured on a famous local press, the SCMP.

Armchair pilots can go back in time to dicey Kai Tak landings
Barclay Crawford
Jan 13, 2008

The pilots loved it. Many of the passengers did, too, especially the plane spotters who came to Hong Kong just to land at Kai Tak airport.

Now they have their chance to experience Kai Tak's unforgettable landings as the airport reopens - in virtual reality.

Three dedicated gamers and programmers have spent the past three years recreating the airport for their game 9Dragons.

The game, for use with Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2004, maps out about 2,000 sq km of Hong Kong scenery for both night and day flying.

"This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the closure of Kai Tak, yet the airport remains just as popular as when it was the third-busiest passenger airport and second-busiest cargo terminal in the world," said Marcus Thompson, known as Clutch in the flight simulator subculture.

"We felt we had an obligation to our fellow simmers [simulator enthusiasts] to try and create a rendition of this icon in its heyday.

"We wanted it to be good enough that pilots could test their flying skills in surroundings which would heighten their experience when trying to land on the infamous runway 13."

For the pilots, the appeal of Kai Tak was in the challenge of the 90-degree-turn that had to be done by sight to bring the plane in to land, calling on all their skills.

For the passengers, it was the view below that made the Kai Tak landing special, as the plane reared up on its side for the descent at just 150 metres above the skyscrapers of Kowloon City below.

Kai Tak closed on July 6, 1998, and flights into the city were sold out in the lead-up to the final landing.

While the new Chek Lap Kok airport's sparkling facilities were certainly impressive, the famous landing is the one the computer aviators long for.

Hong Kong Air Traffic Control Association president Bill Leung was a junior controller when Kai Tak was still in operation, and he understands why the airport is still highly sought after in the virtual world.

Mr Leung, who owns a copy of Flight Simulator but has not seen the new creation, said all major airports had a "straight in" direct approach not requiring a "visual" turn like Kai Tak did over sprawling Kowloon City.

"There was such a tiny space in which to turn. It was much easier for the Cathay Pacific pilots because they had local experience and knew how to use the limited space," Mr Leung said. "But there were some airlines that didn't fly into Hong Kong much that were really scary."

It is those landings that even gamers will be keen to avoid.
