In the short term: I'm going to see Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont on my motorcycle in the spring. After that, I'll need to see Arizona, Hawaii and Alaska to have visited or traversed all 50 states (not including flights and layovers).

Since we started telling people about our plans to bike across Japan, we?ve received lots of cool responses via e-mail, including plans people have for their own adventures.  We'll add some of them here:

?You expressed a bit of wondering about being 40 and doing something like this?go for it!  Life can bring unexpected turns and twists, and go for the wonderful adventures ahead of you instead of saying ?later on in life I?ll do this?, because later on can be too late sometimes!?

I have no words but to say "Wow!!"  I took liberty to forward your e-mail to my brother, son and daughter.  Excellent planning, homework and preparation from your end make it look like I will see Sho's name in Guinness book of world record next year.  I wish you the very best and I will update my reporter friends to cover your adventure in local news papers.  Also, you should write a book of your entire experience starting from the preparation to the end.

(cont'd) I lost my father just a couple of months ago to whom I was very close.  You are on a way to create an example of great father and son bonding.  I have no words to praise Sho's guts and trust in you.  Being a conservative, career oriented, money minded couch potato, I too think that you both are crazy.  But even the thought of doing something one 1000th of what you are doing excited me.  You certainly inspired me to spend some time to play chess or badminton with my son.  Thank you.

Wow. I can't begin to tell you how impressed I am. Not so much at the physical feat you are attempting, but your openness to "crazy ideas" and your dedication to making the lives of your children original and extraordinary.

Thank you for sharing this great adventure plan!!  My initial response was "it sounds crazy", but then I saw that your preparation is thorough.   So, I would say, "Go, Go, It's a great adventure!"

It will be much more complicated than you realize.  There are at least two books recently written by people who have crossed Japan on bikes.  (One had almost 400 flat tires during his trip.)  I hope you will have a good support team, because you will need it.  Sorry if I may sound negative.  I am not trying to be, but what you are planning is a major expedition that will take a mountain of coordination to implement.  It should be fun, though, maybe not during the trip, but afterwards.

I'm defintely in the "that's really cool" camp.  I wish I could take 2 months off to do something like that (instead of nursing babies, which is important, but just not the same!).

This sounds like so much fun. My father did a similar trip with his friends in college across India and the stories, pics are highlights within his life. I love seeing those pics today!

If my company is to maintain a competitive edge in our industry, we need our suppliers (like you) to actually work and not go on joy rides for 2 months at a time.

This is truly a small world.  I too am planning a trip in 2009.  I'm going to Lake Titicaca and may use a bicycle while on that trip.  My bicycle at Lake Titicaca will be much easier to ride than Sho's bike because it will have a front wheel.  Charles, you may want to take another look at Sho's bike.  I think the picture of his bike says it all.  My equipment list for Lake Titicaca is identical to yours except I will also be carrying (continued in next post)...

... a snakebite kit, fig newtons, and anti-monkey butt powder to avoid a condition also known as swamp-ass.  I am a little apprehensive about visiting this lake.  Titicaca, or in English, Shit-Tits, is the worlds highest navigable to large vessels.  So I'm anxious to find out what that means.  I am working on the map of my trip now, to Lake Titicaca, and as well as trying to figure out why I am going on it.  I will post it all on my blog, as soon as I have a blog.  Titicaca.  (continued...)
